Practice Absences

NYAA Program: Cheer
Season: 2017
Policy: Practice Absences

The following policy and procedure will address player absences at practices during the pre-season and season periods. Pre-season Practices:
The pre-season period will be from July 29th to August 23rd. During this period some families may be absent from Cheer practice due to vacation and other family summer activities. In addition, players may become ill and unable to attend practice. There will be no penalty during practice. It must be well understood however, that a number of cheer positions, in regards to stunting that, require “acquired knowledge and skill” that may be learned during this period in order to safely and effectively execute the responsibility of these positions. Therefore, absences from practice may affect their ability to compete for a particular position.

Season Practices:
The season period will be from August 3rd until November 16th. During this period, the following penalties will apply:

  • A missed practice due to vacation: Cheerleader benched for five (5) minutes of actual official clock play time (per each practice missed) during next game; Parents must notify the Head Coach prior to the missed event.
  • A missed practice due to family function: Cheerleader benched for the first five (5) minutes of actual official clock play time (per each practice missed) during next game; Parent must notify the Head Coach prior to the missed event.
  • A missed practice due to illness or church event and the parents has notified the Head Coach before the practice: No penalty up to 3 missed practices during the season, thereafter, Cheerleader benched for the first five (5) minutes of actual official clock play time (per each practice missed) during next game;
  • A missed practice due to illness with a doctor’s note and notification to the Head Coach prior to the missed practice: No penalty
  • Prior contact with coach to miss a practice due to religious commitments.

The head coach may, under special circumstances, elect to give an “excused” absence on a case-by-case basis (i.e., family emergency, chronic illness from known underlying medical condition).

It must be well understood however, that a number of Cheer positions, in regards to stunting, require “acquired knowledge and skill” that may be learned during this period in order safely and effectively execute the responsibility of these positions. Therefore, absences from practice may affect their ability to compete for a particular position.
